Step 1:  Set x to -1 in the first equation

[tex]f(x) = -x^2 + x[/tex]

[tex]f(-1) = -(-1)^2 + (-1)[/tex]

[tex]f(-1) = -(1) - 1[/tex]

[tex]f(-1) = -1 - 1[/tex]

[tex]f(-1) = -2[/tex]

Step 2:  Set x to -1 in the second equation

[tex]f(x) = -x[/tex]

[tex]f(-1) = -(-1)[/tex]
